sent for and not delivered

When my grandmother closes the door behind her to shut out a particularly windy day, and then carefully rearranges her cropped curls but can’t get them quite right, she always says (in exasperation), “I look like something sent for and not delivered!”

Living with her these past few years, I’ve loved getting to learn these sorts of sayings that belonged to her and her family, on their farm, eighty years ago. And I love this one in particular, because it reminds me that we are always on our way….
